del.icio.us 2.0 now launched – Cloudalicio.us down again
July 31st, 2008So, del.icio.us has relaunched themselves today as delicious.com and with it, their new design.
It’s quite remarkable what they’ve done with the new layout and UI – and I applaud them for the deep understanding of the ways people have used their service and continue to bookmark, network, and republish their content.
However, they’ve killed Cloudalicio.us again – alas.
If anyone has knowledge of how to get at the full historical data for a particular URL – please let me know. The parser is easy enough to tweak – but without the right data, the show cannot go on. I’ve found the manual paging option, but… that’s not quite enough for a live mashup…
Bah.

Hello Terrell,
yes they changed again, but I think this time is a really good thing.
For once now they release both the data and the tags in the url page. Yes, they do seem to give only the last 50 people for each page, but this should not be a problem. All in all I believe now we (sorry, you) can build back the program as it was.
ANd on this line:
I am going to the International Workshop on Challenges and Visions in Social Sciences, and I will hold a 3 hour tutorial on tag and tag clouds. Useless to say your tool will/should provide the key tool for people to explore tag clouds. (Observing society through tags: Using tags to help society )
The workshop is happening from the 18th of August. Will the tool be ready by that time? If needed I can help you in the week before. (before that I am at a conference, and will not be available.
Cheers,
Pietro Speroni

Hey Pietro,
The most likely scenario is that I could pre-cache some pages for you and send you some images. I doubt the live service will be running as the paging of the results severely changes how I can get at the live data.
Let me know what you’re thinking would be helpful.

Hey Terrell,
what I will be teaching is a hands on course on how to use tags to spot changes in society. So I expect at some point to ask to the students to go to your website, and find by themselves some situations where the behavious was weird, and how could this be explained in terms of society.
As such what we need is more than just some cached pages. But the other side is that your website would then get quite a lot of publicity, as it gets used academically from a course.
What exactly is the problem? I see that the pages are now giving all the data in terms of both tags, and data. Just about 50 results at a time. Is this a problem?
Cheers,
Pietro

Well, the main problem is that the ‘full’ historical data for a particular url/bookmark is not available in a single http or api request (like it was before). I’m thinking about how to get at it… scaling up to possibly hundreds of requests and parsing and recombining the data hardly seems feasible. But i’m working on it…

Hmm.
yahoo pipes only works with rss. SO i exclude we can use that.
Maybe just making the picture for each 50 people. And then having the possibility to get the previous pic, and so on.
SO you only take one url at the time. But the user can go deeper and deeper.
